Day Trips / Museums in Ankara

Ankara has several excellent museums that work well for a full day or half-day visit. Most are in or near the city centre (especially Ulus and Anıttepe), so you can easily combine them without long travel.

Must-Visit Free or Low-Cost Museums

1. Anıtkabir (Atatürk Mausoleum + Museum)

  • Completely free for everyone.
  • Includes the large Atatürk and War of Independence Museum under the mausoleum.
  • Hours (approximate, check before going):
    – May–Oct: 09:00–17:00
    – Nov–Jan: 09:00–16:00
    – Feb–mid May: 09:00–16:30
  • Allow 2–3 hours. Changing of the guard is a highlight.
  • Easy to reach by metro (Tandoğan) + short walk.

2. Museum of Anatolian Civilizations (Anadolu Medeniyetleri Müzesi)

  • One of Turkey’s best museums (European Museum of the Year winner).
  • Covers Paleolithic to Roman periods with outstanding Hittite and Phrygian finds.
  • Located near Ankara Castle (Ulus).
  • Ticket required (Museum Pass Türkiye accepted; foreign adult ticket around €12 / local prices lower).
  • Open daily, typically 08:30–17:30 or later in summer.
  • Allow 2–3 hours.

3. Free Ulus Museums (easy to combine)

Other Good Options

  • War of Independence Museum / Republic Museum (First and Second Parliament buildings) – often free or low-cost.
  • MTA Natural History Museum (dinosaurs & fossils) – free and family-friendly.
  • Ethnography Museum – ticketed (Museum Pass valid).
  • Rahmi M. Koç Museum (industrial & transport history) – paid, interesting for families.

Practical Tips for a Museum Day

  • Group Ulus-area museums together (Castle + Anatolian Civilizations + free bank/stamp museums).
  • Do Anıtkabir on a separate half-day or morning.
  • Get a Museum Pass Türkiye if you plan to visit several paid state museums.
  • Wear comfortable shoes – some sites involve walking and hills.
  • Check official sites or Google for exact current hours, as they can change seasonally or on holidays.
  • Public transport (metro + buses with Ankarakart) is cheap and efficient.
