Volterra, known to the ancient Etruscans<\/a> as Velathri<\/em> or Vlathri<\/em>[4]<\/a><\/sup> and to the Romans as Volaterrae<\/em>,[5]<\/a><\/sup> is a town and comune<\/a><\/em> in the Tuscany<\/a> region of Italy<\/a>. The town was a Bronze Age<\/a> settlement of the Proto-Villanovan culture<\/a>,[6]<\/a><\/sup>[7]<\/a><\/sup> and an important Etruscan<\/a> center (Vel\u00e0thre<\/em>, Velathri<\/em> or Felathri<\/em> in Etruscan<\/a>, Volaterrae<\/em> in Latin language<\/a>), one of the “twelve cities” of the Etruscan League.[8]<\/a><\/sup>[9]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The site is believed to have been continuously inhabited as a city since at least the end of the 8th century BC.[10]<\/a><\/sup>[11]<\/a><\/sup>[12]<\/a><\/sup> It became a municipium<\/a> allied to Rome at the end of the 3rd century BC.[13]<\/a><\/sup>[14]<\/a><\/sup> The city was a bishop’s residence in the 5th century,[15]<\/a><\/sup> and its episcopal power was affirmed during the 12th century. With the decline of the episcopate and the discovery of local alum<\/a> deposits, Volterra became a place of interest of the Republic of Florence<\/a>, whose forces conquered Volterra.[16]<\/a><\/sup> Florentine rule was not always popular, and opposition occasionally broke into rebellion.[17]<\/a><\/sup> These rebellions were put down by Florence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the Republic of Florence fell in 1530, Volterra came under the control of the Medici<\/a> family and later followed the history of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany<\/a>. In 1472, during the war between Volterra and Florence in the called Allumiere war which finished with the sacking of Volterra by the Duke of Montefeltro<\/a> and his army, it caused the emigration of many wealthy families and the appropiation of their goods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
