The town was a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bronze_Age\">Bronze Age<\/a> settlement of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Proto-Villanovan_culture\">Proto-Villanovan culture<\/a>,<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Volterra#cite_note-Turfa2014-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Volterra#cite_note-7\">[7]<\/a><\/sup> and an important <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Etruscan_civilization\">Etruscan<\/a> center (<em>Vel\u00e0thre<\/em>, <em>Velathri<\/em> or <em>Felathri<\/em> in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Etruscan_language\">Etruscan<\/a>, <em>Volaterrae<\/em> in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Latin_language\">Latin language<\/a>), one of the &#8220;twelve cities&#8221; of the Etruscan League.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Volterra#cite_note-Bold1976-8\">[8]<\/a><\/sup><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Volterra#cite_note-9\">[9]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The site is believed to have been continuously inhabited as a city since at least the end of the 8th century BC.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Volterra#cite_note-BershadMangone2001-10\">[10]<\/a><\/sup><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Volterra#cite_note-DK2014-11\">[11]<\/a><\/sup><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Volterra#cite_note-Guides2015-12\">[12]<\/a><\/sup> It became a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Municipium\">municipium<\/a> allied to Rome at the end of the 3rd century BC.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Volterra#cite_note-13\">[13]<\/a><\/sup><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Volterra#cite_note-Giachi1786-14\">[14]<\/a><\/sup> The city was a bishop&#8217;s residence in the 5th century,<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Volterra#cite_note-Kleinhenz2004-15\">[15]<\/a><\/sup> and its episcopal power was affirmed during the 12th century. With the decline of the episcopate and the discovery of local <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alum\">alum<\/a> deposits, Volterra became a place of interest of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Republic_of_Florence\">Republic of Florence<\/a>, whose forces conquered Volterra.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Volterra#cite_note-Hinze2000-16\">[16]<\/a><\/sup> Florentine rule was not always popular, and opposition occasionally broke into rebellion.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Volterra#cite_note-17\">[17]<\/a><\/sup> These rebellions were put down by Florence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the Republic of Florence fell in 1530, Volterra came under the control of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Medici\">Medici<\/a> family and later followed the history of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grand_Duchy_of_Tuscany\">Grand Duchy of Tuscany<\/a>. It was enlarged in the 13th century after an earthquake. It houses a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ciborium_(architecture)\">ciborium<\/a> and some angels by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mino_da_Fiesole\">Mino da Fiesole<\/a>, a notable wood <em>Deposition<\/em> (1228), a masterwork of Romanesque sculpture and the Sacrament Chapel, with paintings by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Santi_di_Tito\">Santi di Tito<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Giovanni_Balducci\">Giovanni Balducci<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Agostino_Veracini\">Agostino Veracini<\/a>. In the center of the vault are fragments of an <em>Eternal Father<\/em> by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Niccol%C3%B2_Circignani\">Niccol\u00f2 Circignani<\/a>. Also noteworthy is the Addolorata Chapel, with a terracotta group attributed to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Andrea_della_Robbia\">Andrea della Robbia<\/a> and a fresco of <em>Riding Magi<\/em> by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Benozzo_Gozzoli\">Benozzo Gozzoli<\/a>. In the nearby chapel, dedicated to the Most Holy Name of Jesus, is a table with Christ&#8217;s monogram, allegedly painted by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bernardino_of_Siena\">Bernardino of Siena<\/a>.
