The bond between Sant’Anna and Orsanmichele extends beyond the presence of an altar dedicated to the saint inside the church. Notably, a marble statue of Sant’Anna, crafted by Renaissance sculptor Francesco da Sangallo in 1526, highlights the socio-economic history of Florence in the 14th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sant’Anna was traditionally depicted in old age, symbolizing her miraculous fertility through divine intervention, a powerful narrative in a time when old age was associated with infertility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also the Florentines drove the tyrannical Duke of Athens, Gualtieri VI of Brienne, from the city on July 26, 1343, the day of Sant’Anna. On that particular occasion, all political inmates in the Stinche prison were set free, along with all others who had been imprisoned by the Duke as opponents of the regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
