Though it did not have an easy existence, it was constructed with excellent expert report, nearly a technological marvel that also captivated Leonardo da Vinci.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The gigantic golden orb known as the Lantern for Brunelleschi’s dome was created at Verrocchio in 1478 when a difficulty with soldered copper sheets was addressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The “ball” stood in the spring of 1471, but because it was made of copper, lightning quickly started to strike. Thus, the lantern was partially damaged seven months after his inauguration due to a lightning strike to the dome. Looking up at the top of the Brunelleschi dome, you will notice a gold orb created by Verrocchio. This orb has a very unique history, which you will have to learn about by visiting the cathedral.
