One of the most famous mentions appears in the Tabernacle of the Fonticine on Via Nazionale<\/strong>, where an inscription reads:
“This devout tabernacle was commissioned by the men of the Kingdom of Beliemme, located on Via Santa Caterina, in the year 1522.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Some of these forgotten rulers still leave traces in Florence\u2019s streets. In San Ambrogio<\/strong>, a marble plaque<\/strong> at the corner of the church features a crowned emblem<\/strong> with the initials ACAI<\/em> and GM.GM<\/em>, alongside the date 1577<\/strong>. Below it, another inscription reads “Citt\u00e0 Rossa” (Red City)<\/em>, possibly referring to the area’s brick construction<\/strong> or the nearby Via della Mattonaia<\/strong>, historically known for its brick kilns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The Role of the Potenze: Beyond Festivals<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    While primarily festive groups, the Potenze also financed and built chapels, tabernacles, and public works<\/strong> in their neighborhoods. They operated with a structured hierarchy<\/strong>, similar to a royal court, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • Provveditori (Administrators)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Camerlengo (Treasurer)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Captains and Field Masters (Military roles)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Standard Bearers (Flag and emblem keepers)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      With 100\u2013200 members<\/strong>, these groups were small, organized citizen militias<\/strong>, often competing against each other. Their rivalries sometimes led to street battles<\/strong>, forcing authorities to outlaw them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      A marble plaque in Santa Lucia sul Prato<\/strong> reads:
      “Imperator ego vici proeliando lapidus \u2013 Year of the Lord 1594”<\/em>, likely referencing a violent event in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The End of the Potenze: A Threat to the Medici Rule<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      By 1629<\/strong>, under Grand Duke Ferdinando II de\u2019 Medici<\/strong>, the Potenze were permanently banned<\/strong> due to the unrest they caused. Historian Emilio Gabrielli Bacciotti wrote:
