Portofino<\/strong> (Italian pronunciation: [\u02ccp\u0254rto\u02c8fi\u02d0no]<\/a>; Ligurian<\/a>: Portofin<\/em> [\u02ccp\u0254\u027etu\u02c8fi\u014b]<\/a>) is a comune<\/a><\/em> located in the Metropolitan City of Genoa<\/a> on the Italian Riviera<\/a>. The town is clustered around its small harbour, and is known for the colourfully painted buildings that line the shore.[3]<\/a><\/sup> Since the late 19th century, Portofino has attracted tourism of the European aristocracy and it is now a resort for the world’s jet set<\/a>.[4]<\/a><\/sup>[5]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pliny the Elder<\/a> (AD 23 \u2013 AD 79) referred to Portus Delphini<\/em><\/strong> (Port of the Dolphin) as on the Ligurian coast between Genoa<\/a> and the Gulf of Tigullio<\/a>.[6]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The village is mentioned in a diploma<\/em> from 986 by Adelaide of Italy<\/a>, which assigned it to the nearby Abbey of San Fruttuoso di Capodimonte<\/a>. In 1171, together with the neighbouring Santa Margherita Ligure<\/a>, it was included in Rapallo<\/a>‘s commune jurisdiction. After 1229 it was part of the Republic of Genoa<\/a>. The town’s natural harbour<\/a> supported a fleet of fishing boats, but was somewhat too cramped to provide more than a temporary safe haven for the growing merchant marine<\/a> of the Republic of Genoa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1409, when Charles VI of France<\/a> was Doge of Genoa<\/a>, he sold Portofino to the Republic of Florence<\/a>. When Charles was ousted from Genoa, the Florentines gave it back. In the 15th century it was a fief of families such as the Fieschi<\/a>, Spinola<\/a>, Adorno<\/a>, and Doria<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1815, it became part of the Kingdom of Sardinia<\/a> and, from 1861, of the unified Kingdom of Italy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the late 19th century, first British, then other Northern European aristocratic tourists began to visit Portofino, which they reached by horse and cart from Santa Margherita Ligure<\/a>. Aubrey Herbert<\/a> and Elizabeth von Arnim<\/a> were among the more famous English people to make the area fashionable.[7]<\/a><\/sup> Eventually, more expatriates built expensive holiday houses, and by 1950, tourism<\/a> had replaced fishing<\/a> as the town’s chief industry, and the waterfront was a continuous ring of restaurants and caf\u00e9s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
