Castelsardo<\/strong> (Sassarese<\/a>: Castheddu<\/em>; Sardinian<\/a>: Casteddu Sardu<\/em>) is a town and comune<\/a><\/em> in Sardinia<\/a>, Italy<\/a>, located in the northwest of the island within the Province of Sassari<\/a>, at the east end of the Gulf of Asinara<\/a>. It is one of I Borghi pi\u00f9 belli d’Italia<\/a> (“The most beautiful villages of Italy”).[3]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

History<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Archaeological excavations have showed the human presence in the area of Castelsardo since pre-Nuragic<\/a> and Nuragic<\/a> times, as well as during the Roman<\/a> domination in Sardinia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the fall of the Western Roman Empire<\/a>, the monastery of Nostra Signora di Tergu<\/a> was founded nearby, but the current town originates from the castle built here, in 1102 (or 1270), by the Doria<\/a> family of Genoa<\/a>. The castle and the village which gradually formed round it where the seat of the Doria’s fiefdom in the island called Castel Doria<\/em> or Castelgenovese<\/em>, until it was conquered by the Aragonese<\/a> in the 15th century (1448), and named Castillo Aragon\u00e9s<\/em> (Castel Aragonese<\/em>). Except for the Maddalena archipelago<\/a>, it was the last city in the island to join the Kingdom of Sardinia<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Castelsardo, was part of the Savoy<\/a>‘s Kingdom of Sardinia<\/a>, obtained by will of King Charles Emmanuel III<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
