Olbia<\/strong> (Italian: [\u02c8\u0254lbja]<\/a> <\/a>\u24d8<\/a><\/sup>,[2]<\/a><\/sup>[3]<\/a><\/sup> locally [\u02c8olbja]<\/a>; Sardinian<\/a>: Terranoa<\/em>; Gallurese<\/a>: Tarranoa<\/em>)[4]<\/a><\/sup> is a city and commune<\/a> of 60,346 inhabitants (May 2018) in the Italian<\/a> insular province of Sassari<\/a> in northeastern Sardinia<\/a>, Italy, in the historical region of Gallura<\/a>. Called Olbia<\/em> in the Roman age, Civita<\/strong> in the Middle Ages (Judicates<\/a> period) and the Terranova Pausania<\/strong> until the 1940s, Olbia<\/em> has again been the official name of the city since the fascist period<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Geography<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It is the economic centre of this part of the island (commercial centres, food industry) and is very close to the Costa Smeralda<\/a> tourist area. It was one of the administrative capitals of the province of Olbia-Tempio<\/a>, operative since 2005 and canceled after a referendum seven years later. Olbia is a tourist destination thanks to its sea and beaches and also for the large number of places of cultural interest to visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Climate<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Olbia has a Mediterranean climate<\/a> (Csa<\/em>), with mild winters, warm springs and autumns and hot summers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

History<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Although the name is of Greek origin, due to the Greek presence during the seventh century B.C.<\/a>, the city of Olbia was first settled either by the Nuragics<\/a>[7]<\/a><\/sup> or by Phoenicians<\/a>, according to the archaeological findings. It contains ruins from the Nuragic<\/a> era to the Roman era, when it was an important port, and the Middle Ages, when it was the capital of the Giudicato of Gallura<\/a>, one of the four independent states of Sardinia. During the First Punic War<\/a>, the Romans fought against the Carthaginians<\/a> and the Sardinians near Olbia, where the general Hanno died in battle.[citation needed<\/a><\/em>]<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

From 1113 it was the episcopal see of the Diocese of Civit\u00e0<\/a> (succeeding to the Diocese of Gallura<\/a>, the 1070 restoration of the Diocese of Fausania<\/a>, c. 500\u2013750), which was renamed in 1839 as Diocese of Civita\u2013Tempio<\/a> until its formal suppression in favor of (in fact merger into) the Diocese of Tempio\u2013Ampurias<\/a> (also integrating the Diocese of Ampurias<\/a>, which was in personal union<\/a> with the see of Civita from 1506).[citation needed<\/a><\/em>]<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n
