Of the six entrances, only three\u2014the piazza, the Arco delle Campane (Arch of the Bells) in the facade of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/Saint-Peters-Basilica\">St. Peter\u2019s Basilica<\/a>, and the entrance to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/Vatican-Museums-and-Galleries\">Vatican Museums and Galleries<\/a> in the north wall\u2014are open to the public. The most imposing building is St. Peter\u2019s Basilica, built during the 4th century and rebuilt during the 16th century. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/Holy-See\">Holy See<\/a> is the name given to the government of the Roman Catholic Church, which is led by the pope as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/papacy\">bishop of Rome<\/a>. As such, the Holy See\u2019s authority extends over Catholics throughout the world. Almost all supplies\u2014including food, water, electricity, and gas\u2014must be imported. There is no <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/money\/topic\/income-tax\">income tax<\/a> and no restriction on the import or export of funds. As the Holy See, it derives its income from the voluntary contributions of more than one billion Roman Catholics worldwide, as well as interest on investments and the sale of stamps, coins, and publications. Banking operations and expenditures have been reported publicly since the early 1980s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the period from the 4th century to 1870, the Vatican gained control of territory around Rome and served as capital of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Papal-States\">Papal States<\/a>. In 1929 Vatican City\u2019s independent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/sovereignty\">sovereignty<\/a> was recognized by the Fascist Italian government in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/event\/Lateran-Treaty\">Lateran Treaty<\/a>. Sovereignty is exercised by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/pope\">pope<\/a> upon his election as the head of the Roman Catholic Church. He has absolute <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/executive-government\">executive<\/a>, legislative, and judicial powers within the city. In 1984 a major reshuffle of offices in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/Roman-Curia\">Roman Curia<\/a> resulted in the delegation of the routine administration of Vatican City to a pontifically appointed commission of five cardinals headed by the Secretariat of State.
