Discover the magnificent Palazzo delle Cento Finestre, also known as Palazzo del Centauro, in Piazza Santa Maria Maggiore, Florence. This historic building, featuring nearly one hundred windows, was constructed in the early 18th century on the site of ancient homes once belonging to the Hesses, Carnesecchi, and Martini families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Notable for its depiction in Giuseppe Zocchi’s 1744 engravings, the palace earned the “Centauro” name from Giambologna’s nearby Hercules and Centaur Nessus sculpture. Significant renovations in the 19th century by architect Giuseppe Poggi added grand features like a balcony and an illuminated grand staircase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The grand ballroom, with its original blue plaster and white stucco reliefs, stands out among the interior’s many neoclassical decorations by Luigi Catani. The palace has transitioned through various uses, including housing the Prefecture of the Province of Florence, the RAI regional headquarters, and today, the Banca Popolare di Milano.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
