As a <strong>Venetian pope<\/strong>, Paul II brought a new <strong>sense of festivity<\/strong> to Rome, choosing the area around <strong>Palazzo Venezia and Via Lata (now Via del Corso)<\/strong> as the main stage for the celebrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most famous events was the <strong>Corsa dei Berberi (Berber Horse Race)<\/strong>, where <strong>Berber horses<\/strong> raced from <strong>Piazza del Popolo to Piazza Venezia<\/strong>. The race ended at a now-disappeared street called <strong>Via della Ripresa dei Barberi<\/strong>, near <strong>Palazzo Venezia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-corsa-dei-berberi-the-heart-of-the-roman-carnival\"><strong>The Corsa dei Berberi: The Heart of the Roman Carnival<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Berber Horse Race<\/strong> became the highlight of the <strong>Roman Carnival<\/strong>, attracting crowds along Via del Corso. This race, featuring <strong>riderless Berber horses<\/strong>, symbolized the excitement and grandeur of the celebrations, turning the streets of Rome into a festive spectacle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-festival-of-moccoletti-a-night-of-light-masks-and-mischief\"><strong>The Festival of Moccoletti: A Night of Light, Masks, and Mischief<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the <strong>18th and 19th centuries<\/strong>, the <strong>Festival of Moccoletti<\/strong> was celebrated on the last day of <strong>Carnival<\/strong>, <strong>Shrove Tuesday<\/strong>. As the sun set over <strong>Via del Corso<\/strong>, a <strong>massive candlelit game<\/strong> unfolded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To participate, <strong>people had to wear masks and carry a candle or lantern<\/strong>, called a <strong>&#8220;moccoletto.&#8221;<\/strong> The goal was <strong>to keep your own candle lit while trying to extinguish others\u2019<\/strong>. Those whose candles went out had to <strong>remove their masks<\/strong>, exposing their identities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First held in <strong>1773<\/strong>, the <strong>Festival of Moccoletti<\/strong> was the most <strong>symbolic and ritualistic<\/strong> part of the Roman Carnival. Under the <strong>cover of darkness and flickering torchlight<\/strong>, social rules loosened, leading to <strong>pranks, romantic betrayals, thefts, and even stabbings<\/strong>.
