In local lore, this is because on that side \u201cla fiera\u201d (the flood) used to come, and this ram seems to be glaring at the raging waters, as if warning them: \u201cdon\u2019t you dare destroy my bridge again!\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The second ram (on the opposite side) seems <strong>happy, calm, and peaceful<\/strong>. It has a more serene face, without the hair on the nose, as if the danger has passed and everything is under control. The idea is that when the flood recedes, the \u201cfiera\u201d (the floodwaters) flow away toward Pisa \u2014 which historically was an enemy of Florence \u2014 so that second ram is relieved, even joyful, seeing that the threat has left.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In short, these two heads are not identical: one is furious and beast-like, the other tranquil \u2014 capturing a dual symbolism of danger and peace, or threat and relief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-architectural-and-artistic-significance\">Architectural and Artistic Significance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, the use of the ram\u2019s heads is deeply symbolic.
