Eventually, it reached Naples<\/a>, where it first passed through private hands and later came under government control during Spanish rule. The state realized something important: gambling brought money into public coffers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, not everyone was happy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At that time, one of the most influential figures in the city was a Dominican friar, Father Gregorio Maria Rocco<\/strong>. He noticed that the lottery was becoming more than just entertainment. Families were being ruined, and young people were starting to believe they could get rich without working. Concerned about the social impact, he asked the king to ban the game altogether.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neapolitans were not willing to give up their favorite game\u2014especially during the holidays. So they did what they\u2019ve always done best: they adapted. But since the game was now illegal, they couldn\u2019t call out the numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
