an Casciano dei Bagni<\/strong> is a comune<\/a><\/em> (municipality) in the Province of Siena<\/a> in the Italian<\/a> region of Tuscany<\/a>, located about 110 km (68 mi) southeast of Florence<\/a> and about 70 km (43 mi) southeast of Siena<\/a>. It is one of I Borghi pi\u00f9 belli d’Italia<\/a> (“The most beautiful villages of Italy”).[3]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

San Casciano dei Bagni borders the following municipalities: Abbadia San Salvatore<\/a>, Acquapendente<\/a>, Allerona<\/a>, Cetona<\/a>, Citt\u00e0 della Pieve<\/a>, Fabro<\/a>, Piancastagnaio<\/a>, Proceno<\/a>, Radicofani<\/a>, Sarteano<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A destination for travelers during ancient times, San Casciano dei Bagni is a member of a group of communities that are identified to modern tourists as the “prettiest Italian villages” (borghi piu belli d’Italia).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ancient Roman hot baths that were built on an older, Etruscan sanctuary<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The history of San Casciano is strictly connected to the presence of hot fresh waters from 42 springs with a mean temperature of 42 \u00b0C (108 \u00b0F) and a daily delivery of 5.5\u00d7106<\/sup> L (1,500,000 US gal) (third in Europe).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to legends related by sources such as Livy<\/a>,[citation needed<\/a><\/em>]<\/sup> the thermal baths of Balnea Clusina<\/em> were founded by Porsenna<\/a>, an Etruscan<\/a> king of Chiusi<\/a> who Roman sources date to the sixth century BC. The baths also were popular during the ensuing Roman<\/a> era, Augustus<\/a> being said to have been amongst those using the baths.[4]<\/a><\/sup>[5]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the third to fourth centuries, a Christian Pieve<\/em> of St. Mary ad balneo<\/em> existed in San Casciano.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the Middle Ages<\/a> it was initially under Lombard<\/a> rule, and later under the Visconti di Campiglia and the Abbey of San Salvatore. Troops of San Casciano took part in the Battle of Montaperti<\/a> in 1260. The last Visconti ruler was Monaldo, who also was podest\u00e0<\/a><\/em> of Florence in 1389.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

San Casciano was acquired by the Republic of Siena<\/a> in 1412.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Renaissance times its thermal baths attracted visitors from all over Europe, but visits began to decline in the nineteenth century, recovering only during the early twenty-first century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
