Michelangelo’s “David” is a Renaissance masterwork and one of the most recognizable sculptures in art history. The artist’s extraordinary talent and passion are reflected in the story of its creation, which is intriguing. The city of Florence commissioned the famed artist Michelangelo Buonarroti to make a statue of David, a biblical hero who defeated the giant Goliath with a single stone, in the early 16th century.
The so-called “Michelangelo’s secret room” will be open to the public on November 15th, a small room housed in the complex of the Medici Chapel Museum in Florence that displays studies and drawings ascribed to the famed Renaissance painter and sculptor. The room had been neglected for years and had never been seen until now: it is believed that Michelangelo Buonarroti secretly stayed there for a few months in 1530, sketching some of his works on the walls.
