The Academy of Drawing Arts is a private association based in Florence. It is the heir institution of the oldest artistic academy founded by a public authority in the world. Its creation with the name of the Academy of Drawing dates back to January 1563. In 1784, following a profound reform, the name changed to the Academy of Fine Arts of Florence and the teaching functions were strengthened.

Within the same institution, the actual scholastic institute (almost newly formed) and the college of professors coexisted, heir to the older institution also due to its honorific composition and to which only some prerogatives of judgment on the work were maintained of the individual schools of the Academy: the promotion of some artistic prizes, judging in national competitions and the management of part of the assets.

Subsequently, the college of professors once again took the name of the Academy of Drawing Arts following the reforms implementing the guidelines established with the reform of the Gentile school. Since 1938 it has once again assumed its autonomy, inheriting the functions, prerogatives and part of the assets of the Academy of Drawing. It is an association organized into five classes of disciplines (painting, sculpture, architecture, humanities and art history), which deals with heritage protection, study and development of artistic, humanistic and scientific disciplines, organizing and promoting dialogue between knowledge.

Among its members were, among many illustrious men, Michelangelo Buonarroti, Benvenuto Cellini, Andrea Palladio, Galileo Galilei, Lorenzo Bartolini, up to Pablo Picasso. To come with us and discover florence with our expert guide clike here and book your florence free tour.
