FLORENCE, 18 December 2024 – The iconic Monte alle Croci staircase, connecting San Niccolò to Piazzale Michelangelo, has been fully restored and reopened to the public. This historic staircase, home to Italy’s oldest Via Crucis, now boasts enhanced accessibility and a revitalized appearance, including a new dedicated lighting system for its stations.

The restoration, completed after a year and a half of closure due to structural issues, represents an investment of €385,000. Florence’s city councilor for culture, Giovanni Bettarini, praised the project as a “beautiful enhancement of a treasured space in the city.”

Key improvements include the redevelopment of damaged steps and the recovery of a plaque featuring verses from Dante’s Purgatory (Canto III), now fully legible for visitors. The project was executed in collaboration with Florence Smart, ensuring modern lighting and safety measures.

The staircase now offers safe passage to the Rose Garden entrance, providing residents and tourists alike with an enriched cultural and historical experience.
