Singapore Southern Ridges Walk: Henderson Waves and Forest Canopy

Hikers crossing the wave-shaped Henderson Waves bridge in Singapore’s tropical Southern Ridges

Singapore’s Southern Ridges reveal a side of the city far removed from shopping streets and the waterfront skyline. This self-guided walk climbs from HarbourFront through Mount Faber Park, crosses the sculptural Henderson Waves and continues into the forest canopy of Telok Blangah Hill Park. It is a rewarding half-day route for travellers who want tropical nature, architecture and harbour views in one outing.

What makes the Southern Ridges special?

The complete Southern Ridges network connects around 10 kilometres of green spaces, including Mount Faber, Telok Blangah Hill, HortPark and Kent Ridge. You do not need to hike the whole network: this shorter itinerary focuses on its most distinctive bridge and elevated woodland sections.

A 5-kilometre route from HarbourFront to HortPark

1. Climb the Marang Trail

Start near HarbourFront MRT and the junction leading to Seah Im Food Centre. The Marang Trail rises through dense vegetation toward Mount Faber. It includes many steps and feels steep in Singapore’s heat, so walk slowly, carry water and allow extra time after rain.

2. Follow Faber Walk

At the top, continue through Mount Faber Park, which is officially open 24 hours. Viewpoints look over the harbour and southern islands, but the shade can be limited in exposed sections. Early morning is the most comfortable time for this part of the route.

3. Cross Henderson Waves

The 274-metre bridge links Mount Faber and Telok Blangah Hill. Its seven wave-shaped ribs create sheltered alcoves where you can rest. It is Singapore’s highest pedestrian bridge and is illuminated by LED lights daily from 7:00 pm to 2:00 am. For photography, morning gives softer light; evening reveals the architecture.

4. Enter Telok Blangah Hill Park

Continue toward the Forest Walk. The official elevated walkway is about 1.3 kilometres and brings you close to the canopy. Choose it instead of the more demanding Earth Trail if the ground is wet or daylight is fading; NParks states that the Earth Trail should not be entered after 7:00 pm.

5. Finish at HortPark

Pass the Alexandra Arch and descend toward HortPark, where you can rest among themed gardens before leaving by bus or continuing toward Labrador Park. The longer official network takes roughly 3–5 hours over 10 kilometres, so extend only if weather and daylight are favourable.

Heat, rain and accessibility

  • Distance: about 5 km for this shortened route.
  • Time: allow 2.5–3 hours with stops.
  • Best start: 7:00–8:00 am; avoid the hottest midday period.
  • After rain: wooden surfaces, steps and natural trails may be slippery.
  • Accessibility: this full route is not step-free; NParks lists no wheelchair access for Telok Blangah Hill Park. Travellers with limited mobility should plan a separate, shorter visit to an accessible approach where current conditions permit.

Use the Singapore city guide for an autonomous or audio-led urban route, compare available options through the free walking tour hub, and browse compatible bookable experiences to combine nature with food, culture or evening activities.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Southern Ridges walk free?

Yes. The parks, paths and Henderson Waves are free to enter. Transport, food and any separate attractions cost extra.

Can I walk Henderson Waves at night?

Yes, and the bridge lighting operates from 7:00 pm to 2:00 am. Stay on lit routes, do not enter the Earth Trail after 7:00 pm and check weather conditions.

Is the route suitable for children?

Active children can enjoy it, but the climb, humidity and distance require water, sun protection and frequent breaks. Keep younger children close on elevated sections.
