The ceiling, a vast masterpiece with 42 intricately carved and adorned panels, depicts various events of the conquest and the grand apotheosis of Cosimo I. In this magnificent ceiling, above the hearing tribune and tucked away in a corner, lies a truly unique and intriguing painting. Directing our attention to the right, we observe boxes adorned with different puttini (cherubic figures) arranged in triangles and quadrilaterals on a railing, which accentuates the building’s oblique shape. Notably, in the last two larger panels, we see figures overlooking a balustrade. One of these figures, pointing a finger towards us, seems to command our attention, perhaps in varied directions.
Who Are the Painted Figures in the Grand Ceiling?
These painted figures, honoring Grand Duke Cosimo I, are a delicate creation by the renowned architect and painter Giorgio Vasari. Vasari wished to sign the magnificent work of the ‘500 Salon ceiling uniquely, showcasing the collaborators who contributed their expertise to this artistic masterpiece.
1. Bernardo di Mona Mattea: Starting from the left, we see Bernardo di Mona Mattea, a master mason who constructed the entire suite of chambers and erected the ceiling over this fourteen-arm hall.
