In addition to interfering with citizens’ everyday life, these problems endanger the city’s distinctive identity and UNESCO World Heritage designation.
The proliferation of short-term rentals, especially through websites like Airbnb, is one of the most urgent issues. Although these rentals provide travelers with easy access to housing, the unchecked expansion of these businesses has negative effects on the neighborhood. Due to the conversion of many long-term rental properties into short-term lodging, there is less housing available for inhabitants. Due to this change, rental costs have increased significantly, making it more and more difficult for residents to pay to live in the city center. Long-standing communities are being uprooted as a result, and the character of the area is disappearing.

These businesses often flout laws intended to control visitor flows and provide security.
