Burning the Yule Log: A Symbol of Prosperity
In medieval and Renaissance Florence, Christmas Eve was rich with symbolic customs. One cherished tradition involved burning a large log, often oak or olive, in the fireplace. The rising sparks, or “faville,” were seen as omens of good fortune. The following morning, families would scatter the ashes over their fields, invoking blessings and protection for their crops.
“Strain” as a Symbolic Gift
Florentines used the term “strain” not only to refer to the Yule log but also as a synonym for “gift.” On Christmas Eve, families gathered to exchange wishes and prepare festive “strains” for children. These decorated packages, filled with sweets and fruits, were adorned with golden pine cones, fir branches, colorful paper flowers, and candles.
When not crafted at home, these festive gifts could be purchased from vendors under the Loggia del Mercato Nuovo, enhancing the city’s festive charm.
