Did You Know the Negroni Was Born in Florence?
The Negroni cocktail, one of the most famous drinks in the world, was invented in Florence, Italy, in 1919. While many associate Italy with pizza and pasta, few realize that this iconic cocktail also has Florentine roots.
The story begins at Caffè Casoni, a stylish café that later became Caffè Giacosa and then Cavalli Café. One evening, Count Camillo Negroni, a well-traveled aristocrat, wanted something stronger than his usual Americano cocktail. He asked the bartender—either Angelo Tesauro or, more likely, Folco Scarselli—to replace the soda water with gin.
The result? A bolder, perfectly balanced cocktail that quickly gained popularity. Locals began ordering “l’Americano alla moda del Conte Negroni“—what we now know simply as the Negroni.
