1. The Birthplace of Florence Nightingale in Florence

In the 19th century, Florence, already renowned for its rich cultural heritage, became the birthplace of one of the most influential figures in the history of healthcare: Florence Nightingale. She was born in 1820 at Villa Colombaia, located on Via di Santa Maria a Marignolle, and was named Florence in honor of the city.

As we ascend Via delle Campora and reach the small square at the intersection with Via di Santa Maria a Marignolle, Villa Colombaia appears on the right. Adjacent to its main gate, a stone plaque pays tribute to Florence Nightingale, a woman who, though perhaps not widely recognized locally, made a profound impact on the field of nursing and healthcare.

2. Florence Nightingale: The Lady with the Lamp and Her Legacy

Born to English parents, Florence Nightingale dedicated her life to caring for the sick and impoverished. During the Crimean War, she joined the British Army as a nurse and became known as “The Lady with the Lamp” for her nightly rounds tending to wounded soldiers with a lamp in hand.

Her experiences in war hospitals allowed her to identify five essential conditions for a healthy environment:

  • Clean air
  • Pure water
  • Efficient drainage
  • Proper sanitation
  • Adequate lighting

These principles revolutionized hospital design and patient care, significantly reducing infections and mortality rates. Thanks to her efforts, hospitals and healthcare facilities worldwide began implementing improved hygiene and sanitation standards.

3. Florence Nightingale’s Recognition and Memorial in Florence

Florence Nightingale was the first woman to receive the Order of Merit, one of the highest honors in the United Kingdom. After suffering from recurring illnesses, she spent the later years of her life bedridden and passed away in 1910.

To honor her dedication to healthcare, a statue with an inscription was placed in the cloister of Santa Croce in Florence. Her legacy continues to inspire nurses, medical professionals, and public health initiatives worldwide. if you want know more about story like this come at our Florence Free Walking Tour.
