The annual lighting of the Christmas trees occurs on December 7 starting at 5:30 p.m. Florence Mayor Dario Nardella and the many Santas from the Compagnia di Babbo Natale set out from piazza della Signoria to turn on the tree lights in piazza del Duomo at 6 p.m.
Michelangelo’s “David” is a Renaissance masterwork and one of the most recognizable sculptures in art history. The artist’s extraordinary talent and passion are reflected in the story of its creation, which is intriguing. The city of Florence commissioned the famed artist Michelangelo Buonarroti to make a statue of David, a biblical hero who defeated the giant Goliath with a single stone, in the early 16th century.
