One of the most dark mysteries of Florence concerns the ghost of Baldo by Piero Bruni, commonly known as Baldaccio D’Anghiari. Getting to history for his heroic deeds in battle, Baldaccio would always be the spectrum that, after centuries, continues to be wandered around the walls of Palazzo Vecchio. A disturbing presence, which still infesters the elegant rooms of the structure in search of revenge. The character in question was assassinated in one of his rooms in 1441. Fighting alongside the greatest rulers of his time he saw his fame grow enormously, so much so that several convictions were also canceled, including the murder one.
When he was granted Florentine citizenship Cosimo the Elder began to fear the figure of the leader, presaged a loss of power of the Medici family. It seems, therefore, that it was Cosimo who organized the physical elimination of Baldaccio: on November 6, 1441 two hired assassins paid him a trap a trap inside Palazzo Vecchio. It was stabbed between Arnolfo tower, the body thrown by one of the windows and dragged in Piazza della Signoria where it was then beheaded.
Since then, his spirit has been seen cyclically every 50 years on the anniversary of his death in the Castle of Sorci in Anghiari. However, on special occasions, like the eve of the feast of All Saints, he has also been spotted wandering close to the apartments of the Palazzo Vecchio, where he was killed.
Legend has it that Baldaccio’s ghost was seen throughout the old palace. Among the sightings is his armored figure, who is seen walking throughout the hallways or making unsettling nighttime appearances. A few guests claimed to have heard the sound of falling swords and other eerie noises connected to the ghost.
