History of the Church of Perpetual Adoration
On January 11, 1902, the Blessed Sacrament was first exhibited at the Church of Perpetual Adoration on Via Faenza. Since that day, perpetual adoration has never ceased, even during the hardships of World War I, World War II, and the catastrophic Florence flood of 1966. Despite these challenges, the devotion has remained uninterrupted, even through the night.
Architectural Design of the Church
Built in the early 20th century, the church showcases a neoclassical architectural style. Its façade, located along Via Rucellai, features a two-order design with a triangular pediment. The main entrance is flanked by pairs of fluted pilasters with composite capitals, giving it a classical yet inviting appearance.
Above the portal, the upper section houses a polychrome enamelled ceramic high-relief, reminiscent of the works of Della Robbia, and is adorned with intricate coats of arms.
Interior Features and Sacred Art
The interior of the church is designed with simplicity, featuring a single nave. Two side altars, adorned with canvases in gilded frames, create an atmosphere of reverence. The presbytery, enclosed by grates for the nuns, includes bas-relief busts and a dome ceiling. A large grate dominates the choir loft, adding to the church’s solemn atmosphere.
Fluted pilasters and a baroque-style chest of drawers with friezes contribute to the internal decoration. The space, free of direct natural light, is softly illuminated by six lateral oculi and the golden tabernacle on the main altar, where the Blessed Sacrament is permanently exposed.
