A Project Marked by Delays and Archaeological Discoveries
Rome’s Metro Line C 💛, originally planned for the Jubilee of 2000, has faced decades of delays due to corruption scandals and the discovery of around 40,000 archaeological artifacts. Among these remarkable finds are:
- Petrified peach pits 🍑 from ancient times
- Ceramics and vases ⚱ from Roman daily life
- Mosaics and walls from a military barracks built under Emperor Hadrian
Piazza Venezia Station: A Museum 45 Meters Underground
Currently under construction, Piazza Venezia station is set to become one of the most fascinating underground museums in the world. Built across eight levels, it will house restored artifacts displayed exactly where they were found.
Key Highlights:
✔️ Opening Year: 2032 (Just in time for the 2033 Jubilee, marking 2,000 years since Jesus’ death)
✔️ Depth: 45 meters underground
✔️ Size: 66,000 square meters of exhibition space
✔️ Facilities: 27 escalators, 6 elevators
✔️ Main Entrances: Connected to Vittoriano, Palazzo Venezia, and the Roman Forum
Rome’s Hidden Past: Only 10% Excavated
According to the Rome Tourism Office, only 10% of ancient Rome has been uncovered—the remaining 90% is still buried about nine meters below the modern city. With origins dating back to the Stone Age, every excavation risks unearthing ancient ruins, delaying construction projects.
Engineering Challenges: Building Around History
To minimize disruptions, engineers are using a “top-down” excavation method, similar to London’s Jubilee Line. This technique involves:
🔹 Deep underground walls to reinforce the structure
🔹 Careful digging to avoid damaging artifacts
🔹 Tunnels placed 30 meters deep, preventing structural issues
While the train tunnels themselves are not problematic, the constant archaeological discoveries cause major setbacks.
Colosseo-Fori Station: Opening in 2025
Another highly anticipated project is the Colosseo-Fori station, which will include:
🏛 A four-level underground museum showcasing newly found Roman artifacts
⏳ Opening Timeline: Expected within 2025
