Florence Central Market: A 150-Year Legacy of Italian Culture, Architecture, and Gastronomy

Established in 1874, Florence’s Central Market is a historic landmark and culinary hub in the heart of the city. Originally built as part of Florence’s urban renewal during its time as Italy’s capital, the market was designed by Giuseppe Mengoni, architect of Milan’s Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, and inspired by Paris’s grand Halles. Made from innovative materials like cast iron, glass, and pietra serena stone, the market stands as a stunning example of 19th-century Italian architecture.

Located in the San Lorenzo neighborhood, the market was developed to meet the needs of Florence’s growing population and to revitalize local neighborhoods. Today, the Central Market spans 3,000 m², housing over 20 artisan shops with Tuscan specialties and hosting a calendar of events and culinary experiences.

As it celebrates 150 years, the Florence Central Market continues to thrive as a destination for food lovers and cultural enthusiasts, blending traditional charm with modern amenities.
