Around the Santa Maria Novella train station, where two well-known restaurants are about to open, excitement is building. While American fast food chain Five Guys is bringing its signature burgers, dogs, and shakes to the former Conad supermarket down the steps by the tram stops along via Alamanni later in the spring, All’Antico Vinaio is preparing for a homecoming with new panini outlets on the main concourse in the main train station, followed immediately by a place down the subway.
Babae (of the “wine door” renown) expands its operations in the Oltrarno via Santo Spirito, with Prae located directly across the street. Recently opened, this charming extension offers “artisan food to go,” including paninis, sweet potato fries, paprika potatoes, smoked salmon, and beef tartare. Chianti “tuna” is pork that crumbles like fish. Roasted corn on the cob is also available with delicious sauces. On March 13, Enrica Della Martira, the owner of Orto San Frediano and an Italian culinary presenter, will launch Wanda Caffè in via Pisana 12–14. Previously, this location catered to fashionistas with its retro vibe.
In other developments, the famed confectionery Migone has closed its doors in via Calzaiuoli and moved to via Santa Elisabetta, which is a smaller and “more manageable” location. Due to their advanced age, the 1916 establishment’s proprietors, Delia and Silvia (a daughter of the founders), decided to relocate. The store, which will open in March, will still have fruit jellies, dragees, and other sweets.
