The Pudic Venus, a stunning representation of ancient beauty, stands as a symbol of artistic mastery and historical significance. Inspired by the famed Aphrodite of Cnidus, the statue shares notable similarities with the Capitoline Venus, another celebrated depiction of the goddess. This work of art traces its origins to antiquity, arriving in Rome at an unknown time and possibly adorning the splendid Villa Adriana in Tivoli.

From Villa Medici to the Uffizi Tribune

During the Renaissance, a period marked by the fervent collecting habits of noble families, the statue likely caught the attention of Cardinal Ferdinando de’ Medici. It is believed he acquired the Pudic Venus for display at Villa Medici. Although its presence there is not definitively documented until 1638, its association with the Medici family is unmistakable. In 1677, Cosimo III de’ Medici, despite his reputation for piety, brought the statue to Florence. He placed the nude goddess in the prestigious Uffizi Tribune, where she became a highlight of the gallery’s ancient sculpture collection.

Admired Across Centuries

The Pudic Venus captivated audiences throughout history, including Napoleon Bonaparte, who specifically requested to view the statue during his brief stay in Florence in 1796. However, the statue’s fate took a dramatic turn during the Napoleonic conquest of Italy. In 1803, as part of the widespread appropriation of artistic treasures, the Venus was transported to Paris. Despite attempts by Grand Duke Ferdinand III to protect it by shipping it to Palermo, the plan failed. The statue was among the first works taken from the Grand Duchy of Tuscany during Napoleon’s spoliations, as recorded by Vittorio Sampieri, a Sienese restorer contracted by Uffizi Director Tommaso Puccini.

Return and Restoration

Following its removal, the Medici Gallery displayed a replica created by Antonio Canova. The original Pudic Venus was eventually recovered in 1815, during the Restoration period, and reinstated in its rightful place at the Uffizi Gallery. Since then, it has remained a centerpiece, admired for its timeless beauty and historical journey.
